I like your analysis of the two types of conservative, and I'm with you in bemoaning how almost all Authentic conservative voices have been drowned out (or swallowed up) by the Gordon Gekko variety. In the last 25 years, if we could have heard a few more Authentic voices loud and clear above the clamoring din of the Gekkoes, it's my guess we wouldn't be floppping around in the economic quagmire we've danced our way into at the beginning of this new millennium.

Ordinarily, I think of myself socio-politically as "liberal" or "progressive," but I positively identify with the Authentic conservative perspective you've laid out here. Like you, I think a completely arrogant greed divorced from any sort of compassion is at the root of the so-called "conservative/neo-con" ideology we've been living with for a long time now.

Ultimately it's much more effective to sit down to a discussion than to stand up for beliefs right or wrong. And it certainly goes a long way toward building a community when both sides actually trust that something might be gained from discourse and dialogue rather than "winning" the argument by shouting down the opposition. Maybe a day will dawn when Authentic conservatives reclaim their territory from the power-mad Gekkoes, and we can put civility back into our Civil Discourse. I hope so.

PS. I forgot to mention that your prediction is about it becoming illegal to move offshore to avoid taxes is already coming to pass. Did you know that Americans can no longer send amounts of more than $2000 by wire to countries like Panama! Its crazy. I know cause I am in the business, but most Americans get very angry when they find out how the government is taking away freedoms behind their backs.

I live on the other side of this equation. I moved from Canada to Panama last year and see all the jobs and money flowing offshore, or should I say onshore (relative to me here in Panama). The real estate here has doubled in value in the last 2 years and is not slowing down as American and European dollars and people keep flooding in. I myself moved here so I could hire programmers at 1/10 the cost of Canada. Please don't shoot me but I could not compete if I hired 10 programmers in Canda. Actually I would be broke in 1 year. So in a way I was forced. Many people blame the business men who are exploiting the cheap labour but in many cases we just don't have a choice.

Thanks for the kind words Mr. Henke.

I enjoy being a Dierbergs customer, I want to STAY being a Dierbergs customer.

I fear the moment when the Big Box and Brown Sludge chains will drive the local independent out of business, and I'll have to shop with them because I don't have any choice.

People need only look to the East to see what I mean.

There are a great MANY cities in the east where your choices are either a Big Box Super Center or a "Gigantic" (cough) food chain store.

The local versions of Schnucks and Dierbergs were effectively murdered there, and people have NO choice in the matter. If you want to buy groceries you HAVE to buy them from one of the two hideous choices.

I'd love to see Dierbergs and Schnucks get their act together to the point where they could beat back the onslaught that is surely coming.

I work at one of the Dierbergs stores, and understand completely what you are saying. I work hard every day to help every customer to the best of my ability. I would like to say this really spoke to me and made my job all the more important to me. Thanks.

It always helps to talk to a good friend, when dealing with a fear.
Internalizing problems never does your body any good.
Many people think that others knowing of their fears shows weakness, I think it shows strength, a turn-on of sorts that a man can be real, have fears and is able to verbalize them.
Just a thought.......

Hear hear.

We're in the same boat. I loathe Alec Baldwin, but the fact that he walked into a sucker punch of alienated parental rights divorce court shennanigans makes me actually have to reconsider the man as a human.

I finally see Bassiger for what she is. Only a classless person would have exploited a moment of parental anger in the public forum like that. She's just awful.

Sadder still, now that I've learned that it wasn't natural causes that Brad died of.

He has apparently taken his own life.

Everyone who has opened there mouth publicly since he passed has been unable to keep from mentioning what a giving and selfless person he was. A comment I read the other day by someone who knew him well suggested that he had just given and given until he gave it all away.

One of the other members of Boston stated simply "We've just lost the single nicest guy in all of Rock and Roll." I believe that.

Interesting that you mention tribute bands - not a lot of people were aware of Brad's fascination with The Beatles. He produced and actually played in one of the more famous Beatles tribute bands in the Boston area.

Kind of hard to get your head around a Rock legend like Brad paying tribute to another legend.

Damn I miss him.
